May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
In 1978, a joint congressional resolution established the first ten days of May as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week. In 1992, Congress expanded the observance to a monthlong celebration that is now known as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. During this month, we recognize the contributions and influence of Asian Pacific Americans on our country’s history, culture, and achievements. In 2019, the US Census Bureau estimated 23 million Asian Pacific Americans reside in the United States. Among these are golfer Tiger Woods, actress Lucy Liu, fashion designer Vera Wang, architect I. M. Pei, and, of course, Pragmatics founder and CEO Dr. Long Nguyen.
In 1985, Dr. Long established the company in his home with the vision of creating an organization highly skilled at developing practical, technology-oriented solutions for federal government clients. He wanted to build a company recognized for high-quality work and client satisfaction. While Pragmatics grew slowly in the beginning, its excellent work became increasingly known in the federal marketplace, driving increased growth and attracting first-rate talent. In 1987, Kimmy Duong joined the company and today is its Vice Chairman and CFO. Thirty-one years ago, Dr. Long laid the solid foundation that underlies the company today: diversified clients, talented employees, investments in training and infrastructure, and prime contracts.
As much as Dr. Long and Kimmy have succeeded in business, they both believe in giving back to the nation and the local community. He has said, “As immigrants, my family is extremely grateful for the many opportunities afforded us in the United States and Northern Virginia. We hold education in high esteem and want to give back.” In this spirit, Dr. Long and Kimmy have financially supported several educational organizations.
