How did you get started in your field? What was your journey to Pragmatics like?

I've enjoyed working with computers from a young age. I realized I wanted to go into the Information Technology (IT) field while I was in high school, so most of my electives revolved around computers. I went on to major in Information Systems in college.

I started working at Pragmatics in late 2013, and it is my first IT job out of college. I heard about Pragmatics through my mother, who worked for the company from 2009-2010 when it was located in McLean, Virginia. She enjoyed her time working at Pragmatics as a technical writer, so she recommended I apply.

What is it like to work in Corporate IT? Why is your role important?

Working in the corporate IT environment is fast-paced and requires staying up-to-date on the latest issues, patches, and solutions so our users’ workflow can continue to function properly. I am constantly learning new things about how to fix current problems and prevent future ones. My role is crucial because I'm responsible for keeping these essential back-end business functions operating to ensure employees can support our clients.

I'm currently working on migrating our users off of our third-party audio conferencing vendor so that we can use Microsoft Teams. This will streamline how we support our users while preparing us for when support for the old audio conferencing tool ends July 2021.

What workplace training and support have you received that improved your knowledge and skills of this work? How can this training benefit your career development?

Since starting at Pragmatics, I've received workplace training that includes skills from imaging laptops through Windows Deployment Services (WDS) to providing cloud services and support for things such as OneDrive and Azure. It's made me appreciate all of the little details that go into IT – and other jobs as well. The training has allowed me to stay up to date in the ever-changing world of IT.

I also love the flexibility at Pragmatics. It's straightforward to get the help you need to do your job, which is essential in helping the users I support.

Outside of work, how do you describe yourself?

I'm a techie outside of the workplace, but with a bigger focus on consumer tech – I love TVs, audio equipment, phones, apps, video games, and cars. I'm the designated "IT guy" in my family, so I troubleshoot their issues as well.

I'm also a big sports junkie. My favorite sports are football, basketball, and baseball. Over the summers, I play basketball and exercise almost daily.
