Java Framework Development
SCOPE AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Pragmatics provided software development and
training for an Enterprise Java framework to develop applications for the Bureau
of Public Debt (BPD). The Java framework enabled Web applications to interact
with the legacy IBM 390 mainframe. Our work included integrating, testing, and
configuring the Java framework for the BPD. Consistent with our SEI CMM Level 3
processes, we developed a software requirements specification, requirements
traceability matrix, software development plan, design document, functional test
report, QA plan, CM plan, project defined software process, training plan, risk
management plan, and critical resources plan.
Pragmatics developed and delivered a technical course that trains BPD’s
programmers to use Java in IBM VisualAge for Java Enterprise Edition version 3.
Pragmatics developed both the instructor guide and the student materials. These
materials consist of both PowerPoint slides and text. The instructor’s guide
contains 425 slides and the student materials consist of written materials (213
pages) and PowerPoint slides (347 pages). Pragmatics is supplying both an
instructor and technical subject matter expert (SME) during training. Each class
consists of both lecture and hands-on training and lasts eight days. We
delivered five sessions for 14 students in each session.
DELIVERING QUALITY CUSTOMER SERVICE: Because of our outstanding
performance, Pragmatics was awarded a follow-on to develop additional
applications: ComNet (used to track and inventory voice and data networks), RBI
(replacing Retired Bonds microfilm with digital /images), telephone access to the
Treasury Direct application, and Phase II of the Framework design.
TECHNOLOGY: The Java framework was extremely complex because it is
designed to exploit the features of newer technologies including message
queuing, enterprise directories, XML, Enterprise JavaBeans, and J2EE. This
programming architecture standardizes programming methods, housekeeping
activities, and tracking. The code was developed using the Java Development Kit
(JDK) and is operated under IBM’s WebSphere Advanced Server. The task was
managed following Pragmatics’ SEI CMM Level 3 processes.
