In Our Community

Serving our country and communities has been a part of Pragmatics' culture since our inception. During the more than 26 years since our establishment, we have made contributions to a variety of organizations and causes. These have included raising money for victims of, and families affected by, the tornadoes, floods, and severe weather in southern and midwestern United States; the Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami; the Haiti earthquake; those displaced by Hurricane Katrina and the 9/11 attacks on the United States. Pragmatics also sponsored a dinner for 250 wounded veterans from Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In November 2009, Pragmatics founder and CEO Dr. Long Nguyen and his wife made a $5 million donation to George Mason University. The donation established the Long and Kimmy Nguyen Engineering Building, a world-class facility for teaching and research at the Fairfax campus of the prestigious northern Virginia institution. The Nguyens made the donation to underscore their strong commitment to the university, education, and northern Virginia, where their family resides.

With our continued corporate growth and the passion our employees show for helping others, in 2008 we established PragmaticSERVES (Supports, Encourages, Responds, Values, Energizes, and Strengthens) to facilitate giving back to the communities where our employees live and work. Its mission is to encourage interaction among employees through planning and executing philanthropic activities for charitable and nonprofit organizations working to meet human care needs.

PragmaticSERVES has experienced great success, with active participation from employees at the Reston, Virginia headquarters location; the surrounding Washington, D.C. metropolitan area; and the Charlottesville, Virginia and Tampa, Florida offices. Employees take great pride in their efforts and in Pragmatics' strong commitment to corporate citizenship.

Recent initiatives include:

  • Raising $27,000 for Spring Storms 2011 to support those affected by the severe weather in southern and midwestern United States, and nearly $27,000 for the Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami relief effort, both through the American Red Cross. CEO Dr. Long Nguyen generously matched all employee contributions for these initiatives dollar-for-dollar.

  • Raising nearly $2,000 for the American Cancer Society through Relay for Life. Team Mission Possible raffled an iPad 2 to raise funds for cancer research, awareness, and treatment.

  • Sponsoring the 4 The Wounded 5k charity run, which raised nearly $75,000 for the Wounded Warrior Program, a nonprofit organization that provides programs and services for injured service members.

  • Sponsoring Tampa Bay Rays baseball tickets for families of the servicemen and women of MacDill Air Force Base.

  • Partnering with the Salvation Army for a third year to sponsor the Angel Tree Program. Pragmatics provided 125 children in need with new clothing and toys during the holiday season.

  • Participating in the American Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes program. We provided 500 holiday cards with personal sentiments that were distributed to members of the armed forces in military hospitals and on active duty in the U.S. and abroad, to their families, and to veterans.

  • Collecting supplies for Operation Christmas Child to support Samaritan’s Purse, an international organization that provides aid to victims of war, poverty, natural disaster, and disease. Employees filled shoeboxes with new toys, school supplies, hygiene items, candy, and other items.
